Texas Tech Board of Regents approves lease for pediatric, psychiatry expansion in Amarillo

  • May 9, 2026

AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) – The Texas Tech Board of Regents has approved a lease agreement for the expansion and relocation of pediatric and psychiatry services at its Amarillo campus.

The Texas Tech School of Medicine in Amarillo has entered into two 10-year lease agreements to support the expansion of pediatric subspecialties and the relocation and expansion of the Department of Psychiatry.

The expansion fits within Tech’s $10 million fundraising initiative to increase access to specialty pediatric care in the region.

The lease will have a total of 34,000 square feet with the first year lease not to exceed $5 million.

Tech says the initiatives are intended to meet an increasing patient demand, expand clinical capacity and advance patient care, education and regional impact.

“We are a big enough area and city that our patients should not have to leave this area to get top notch care,” said Brian Weis, M.D., regional dean, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine. “What we’re hoping to do is bring the providers here so that the children that need care here can stay in Amarillo with their families and get all the care they need by the specialists they require and the same thing with behavioral health.”

The new facility will be in the previous Amarillo Medical Specialist building across Coulter Street from the School of Medicine.

Tech says the lease agreement is intended to serve as a temporary solution to address urgent needs while long-term fundraising continues.

Tech officials say it is looking at months to a year or more to move into the new facilities once plans and renovations begin.
