LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) -Two days after starting off the BYU series with a 2-1 victory, Texas Tech baseball (26-25, 9-18 Big 12) claimed its first conference series since late March outlasting the Cougars in a 15-11 track meet Saturday afternoon.
Red Raider first baseman Logan Hughes recorded one of his best performances of the season with five RBI’s, including a two-run shot in the bottom of the third. He also had one other hit and three other runs.
After three lead changes, Tech entered the bottom of the fourth down 7-5 but quickly surged ahead courtesy of a six-run inning which included RBIs from Connor Shouse, Matt Quintanar, and Hughes. One inning later, Kyeler Thompson added to the lead with a home run past the left field fence- making it a 12-7 game.
After BYU cut Tech’s lead to one run, a two-RBI triple from Linkin Garcia in the seventh- followed by a Matt Quintanar home run in the eighth gave the Red Raiders enough insurance for the win.
Jonny Lowe (3-1) was credited with the win and the save. Tech currently sits in twelfth place in the Big 12 standings and are still in position to qualify for the conference tournament later this month in Surprise, Ariz., which only takes 12 teams.
