In the 1980s, hedge-fund manager Howard Rachofsky visited the Richard Meier-designed High Museum of Art in Atlanta. He was so impressed by the building that he asked Meier to design a home for him in Dallas.

It was around this time that the renowned architect was selected to design the Getty Center in Los Angeles, Howard said, and he didn’t expect Meier to have time for “a little house in Dallas, Texas.” But to his surprise, Meier agreed, telling Howard “he liked doing houses as laboratories for developing bigger ideas, and if I was patient, he would be interested in working with me.”
