LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Fresh off a successful regular season which includes a Big 12 regular season title and the best softball record in the country, the Texas Tech Red Raiders (52-6) now officially know what lies ahead as they will try to return to Oklahoma City to compete in the Women’s College World Series.
During Sunday evening’s NCAA selection show, it was revealed the third -seeded Red Raiders, who are now ranked No. 11 in the country, will start off the tournament hosting Marist (37-19) in a regional which also includes Boston University (46-13) and Ole Miss (34-24) in a double elimination format. First pitch for the Red Raiders is set for 3:30 p.m. Friday at Tracy Sellers Field. Boston University and Ole Miss will play the earlier game at 1 p.m.
Should Tech and Ole Miss meet up, it will be a rematch of last year’s matchup, where the Red Raiders opened the WCWS with a 1-0 win over the Rebels.
The winner of the Lubbock Regional will advance to super regionals, where they will play the winner of the Gainesville Regional (which includes No. 2-seed Florida, Florida A&M, Georgia Tech and Texas State) in a best-of-three format for the right to play in OKC.
A potential Texas Tech-Florida series would be a road trip for the Red Raiders. However, Tech softball could still host the following week if the team wins its respective regional and Florida does not.
Red Raider softball went 22-4 this year in Big 12 competition. While Co-Big 12 Pitcher of the Year NiJaree Canady (22-5), has an ERA of 1.24, Kaitlyn Terry has one of 1.30 and a plus-.400 batting average along with Mihyia Davis, Jackie Lis, and Mia Williams. Head softball coach Gerry Glasco was also named Big 12 Coach of the Year for the second straight year.
