Authorities said they received reports about a man who was “yelling in the woods” on Friday shortly after 10:30 p.m.
Citing police records, WFSB reported that Van Stockum was heard shouting “Mama.”
While officers were on the way, police said dispatch received a 911 call from a man who admitted he just killed his mother.
When they arrived at the scene, they arrested Van Stockum, whose mugshot shows his face covered in scratches and blood.
Police said emergency personnel tried to save the woman, who was later identified as 55-year-old Laura Williams. Police said she was pronounced deceased at the scene.
According to WFSB, police said Williams suffered blunt-force trauma to her head and a cracked skull, with the media outlet adding that “a hammer covered in blood” was beside her on the ground.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner said Williams’ cause of death was blunt injuries to her head and the manner of death was homicide, according to The New York Post.
Van Stockum, who appeared in court on Monday, is being held on a $2 million bond, police records show.
