CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Severe storms swept through the Coastal Bend overnight, waking many residents around 2 a.m. as strong winds and heavy rain moved across the region.
According to Chief Meteorologist Carly Smith, some of the strongest wind gusts were recorded near NAS Corpus Christi, where winds reached 84 miles per hour — approaching hurricane-force strength.

Communities across the region reported downed tree limbs, debris and scattered damage as the storm system moved through South Texas.
At one point, more than 21,000 customers across Texas were without power.
In a statement to First Edition, Omar Lopez with AEP Texas said all outages were weather-related and crews immediately began responding.
Lopez said crews were utilizing “switching and isolating, as well as redirecting power” in an effort to restore service as quickly and safely as possible.
While all severe weather warnings have since expired, cleanup and restoration efforts continue across the Coastal Bend.
