Donte Murry was found guilty by a Collin County jury about two years after witnesses and crime scene investigators linked him to a fatal shooting near the intersection of North Jordan Road and Woodberry Lane on April 28, 2024, according to a news release from the Collin County district attorney’s office.
The shooting happened after a planned drug deal turned into an armed robbery, prosecutors said in the release.
Witnesses saw a man, later identified as Murry, approach a parked vehicle on the street, argue with the person inside and then fire multiple gunshots. Prosecutors said Murry returned to the vehicle after the shooting, took items and fled on foot.
McKinney police responded to the scene around 2 p.m. and found the man fatally shot inside the vehicle, police said in a news release at the time.
Investigators found a .45 caliber shell casing inside the victim’s vehicle that was later matched to a handgun found in Murry’s backpack, prosecutors said. Investigators also followed muddy footprints from the scene to a nearby home where a SWAT team helped find Murry.
Murry was arrested and later found guilty after prosecutors presented recorded interviews and incriminating text messages regarding the planned robbery.
“This defendant planned an armed robbery, murdered the victim, and then tried to cover it up with lies. A Collin County jury saw through it all and held him fully accountable,” Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis said in the release.
