A bougie grocery chain will upgrade dozens of its stores in 2026, including those in San Antonio. Target recently announced a $5 billion project to modernize its interiors, add new shopping features and help reduce customer wait times.
Updates to the stores include more grab-and-go meals, locally relevant murals and displays made in state, according to a Target press release. More than 130 stores will get makeovers, with 12 in Texas, giving the state the highest number of remodels nationwide.

Visitors may notice that some of the new elements are similar to those featured at H-E-B stores, where guests can purchase Meal Simple trays and view artwork designed by local creatives. Austin native Tara Johnston shared a photo of their H-E-B piece, decorated with wildflowers, fresh produce, and Mexican hats, which is viewable at 2400 South Congress Avenue.

“These investments are all about making Target an even easier, more inspiring and friendly place to shop,” stated Laurie Mahowald, senior vice president of Raget Properties. “We’re evolving our stores in ways that reflect how guests shop today — from more intuitive layouts to expanded assortments — while also strengthening the role our stores play in fulfillment and our long-term growth.”

By the end of this summer, many Targets will debut different floor plans that prioritize fresh food, especially the commonly shopped Good & Gather and Favorite Day brands. Madix — a manufacturer headquartered in Terrell, with partners including ACE Hardware and True Value — has been chosen to create new shelving and displays for many of the renovated stores.
On top of this, the retail giant is aiming to get folks their products quicker. Visitors will benefit from a larger selection of drive-up lanes and additional services in the Order Pickup, Exchanges & Returns, and Express Self-Checkout departments. The goal is to reduce wait times in-store.
