GILLETTE, Wyo. — A Campbell County man has been charged with felony theft after allegedly being found in possession of a saddle reported stolen in Texas, according to an affidavit of probable cause filed in Circuit Court of the Sixth Judicial District.
Court records state that Kanyon Guy Fischer was arrested on Oct. 26, 2023, and charged with felony theft. The charge followed an investigation by the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office into a saddle reported stolen out of Harris County, Texas.
According to the affidavit, a deputy was dispatched to the sheriff’s office lobby after Fischer arrived to turn in a brown leather horse saddle. Sanders later determined that the saddle matched one reported stolen in Houston on Sept. 24, 2023. The owner confirmed the saddle’s serial number and told deputies it was the same saddle taken from her property several months earlier.
The owner told investigators she had previously employed Fischer for about 10 days in July 2023 and that his employment ended after she suspected him of stealing other items. She said she was “almost 100% sure” Fischer came to mind when she learned the saddle had been stolen because he had previously shown interest in the specific “Bob Lee saddle” that was missing.
Fischer provided a statement to law enforcement explaining how he came to possess the saddle. He claimed he had bought it from a pawn shop before later trading it for a .22-caliber pistol and a pair of chaps. He estimated the value of the gun and chaps to be around $400. Fischer also said the person he traded with told him he could exchange about $1,200 worth of items for a $7,500 saddle, though he claimed he did not know the saddle’s actual value or that it had been stolen.
The investigation began when a woman contacted the sheriff’s office with information about the saddle after posting it for sale on Facebook roughly a month earlier. The woman told deputies she knew the owner and believed the saddle matched the one reported stolen. Investigators later confirmed through a constable that the saddle had been listed as stolen in Harris County.
After verifying the serial number and collecting statements from those involved, the deputy concluded there was probable cause to charge Fischer with theft.
All allegations described in the affidavit are claims made in a formal charging document. Fischer is presumed innocent unless found or pleading guilty in a court of law.
