Nearly 1,000 students participated in a NASA-inspired challenge tied to real spaceflight research

What started in Plano ISD classrooms as sketches, science concepts and creative brainstorming is now connected to a real mission tied to space exploration. Two Plano Independent School District students recently earned top honors in the district’s Mission 19 Student Spaceflight Experiments Program (SSEP) Patch Contest, a districtwide competition inspired by NASA-style mission design and scientific discovery.

The winning artwork from the elementary and secondary divisions will now help represent Plano ISD’s participation in the national SSEP initiative, while student-led science experiments developed at Academy High School are also preparing for launch.

A Districtwide Creative Challenge

The Mission 19 Patch Contest invited students across Plano ISD to design original mission patches inspired by themes of space exploration, innovation and discovery.

The response was massive. Nearly 1,000 submissions were entered from campuses throughout the district, including approximately 750 elementary designs and 250 secondary-level entries.

Among the winners:


Noah Walker: a fifth grader at Barksdale Elementary School, earned first place in the elementary division with a colorful illustration featuring an astronaut floating above Earth surrounded by galaxies, stars and bursts of color.
Julius Willems: a sophomore at Clark High School, captured the secondary division title with a polished mission-style patch design titled Mission Twenty, featuring an astronaut holding the moon beneath the phrase “For the Benefit of All.”

Student Experiments Headed Beyond Earth

The excitement extends beyond artwork. Students at Academy High School were also selected for flight as part of the national SSEP program, which allows student-designed scientific experiments to travel into microgravity environments for research.

One selected experiment, developed by co-principal investigators Adeena Nasir and Camille Juliet Hatfield under teacher Gwen Thomas, explores how microgravity affects capillary action within jade plant cells.

Using a mini-lab system, the experiment will examine how water travels through plant tissue in space conditions, research connected to broader conversations around long-term space agriculture and future human habitation beyond Earth.

A second Academy High School project, led by freshman Aiyana Xiong, earned honorable mention recognition for research examining how microgravity may affect lignin, a structural component critical to plant stability and growth.

More Than A Classroom Project

Programs like SSEP are designed to bridge classroom learning with real-world scientific exploration, giving students opportunities to participate in authentic research tied to national space initiatives.

For Plano ISD, the contest and experiments also highlighted the intersection of creativity, engineering, science and imagination, showing students that space exploration involves far more than astronauts alone.

The district credited Art Coordinator Colin McGrane, Career and Technical Education Coordinator Dan Blier and a panel of 17 staff judges for helping organize and evaluate the competition.
