Charity League contribution will support new baseball and softball field upgrades for local children and families.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Corpus Christi Police Department Police Athletic League received a $428,485 donation on Wednesday to help complete renovations at its youth sports complex, designed to serve underprivileged children in the Coastal Bend.

Officials said the donation from the Charity League of Corpus Christi will help pay for finishing touches at the new baseball and softball complex, including batting cages, bleachers and equipment for players and umpires.

Deputy Chief of CCPD’s Operations Bureau Donald Moore said the Police Athletic League was created to give children a place to play sports without the high costs often associated with youth leagues.

“This provides a place where these underprivileged children can come play sports,” Moore said. Moore said the project began with a vision from Driscoll Children’s Hospital and has grown into what he described as a “top-level” sports facility.

“It’s literally a whole new facility,” Moore said. “All new bathrooms, concession stands, all new fields, parking lot. They’ve literally taken it to the ground and started completely over.”

According to Moore, the new fields include artificial turf and upgraded soil work designed to help the facility last for years. Construction crews are currently working on parking lots as the project moves closer to completion.

Charity League President Kristen Sterett said the organization has been raising money since October 2025 through community donations, businesses and local foundations.

“It really has been a community effort to raise this money,” Sterett said.

Starrett said the donation supports programs that connect police officers and local youth through sports leagues and positive community involvement.

“They’re doing great things for youth in our community,” Sterett said. “This baseball field will be such a benefit to our community.”

Officials said the completed facility is expected to provide more opportunities for children and families across Corpus Christi for years to come.
