ARLINGTON — He legged out a triple, beat a throw at home plate, hustled for an infield single and, even when the third of those three events left him with a rolled ankle, Rangers right fielder Brandon Nimmo attempted to remain in a game that had already been blown open. 

This, the Rangers have learned, is the Nimmo experience.

“He didn’t want to come out of the game,” Rangers manager Skip Schumaker said. “He’s been a pain in my butt trying to take out of the game since I met him.”

Which, Schumaker clarified, “is a good thing,” and matches the makeup that the Rangers believed could benefit their club when they acquired Nimmo from the New York Mets last fall. Nimmo went 3 for 4 with a triple and a run scored in Tuesday’s 7-4 win vs. the Arizona Diamondbacks at Globe Life Field before he exited in the sixth inning with a sprained left ankle. Schumaker classified Nimmo as day-to-day after X-rays came back clean, and Nimmo, after a round of treatment, believes he “avoided a scare.”

Nimmo hustled out an infield single off of Diamondbacks right-hander Brandon Pfaadt, stepped on first baseman Ildemaro Vargas’ foot when he touched the bag, rolled his ankle and limped down the foul line. He returned to first base, remained in the game after a visit from Rangers manager Skip Schumaker and a trainer but was removed one at-bat later and was replaced by pinch runner Sam Haggerty.

“It’s kind of warmed up since [treatment] and I’m walking around on it fine,” Nimmo said. “I anticipate being relatively fine. It’ll probably be sore tomorrow. We’re going to wake up tomorrow and see how it is. That’s always the test.”

Schumaker said that Tuesday’s game was the first in which Nimmo’s hamstring — which tightened up last month and forced him to exit a pair of games early — felt entirely healed. His one-out triple in the fifth inning confirmed as much, and in the next at-bat, he used a good jump and his “top end speeds” to scored on a ground ball. Rangers shortstop Corey Seager hit a chopper to Vargas, but Nimmo was more than halfway down the line before the first baseman fielded the ball, and had already dove toward home plate before catcher Gabriel Moreno caught it.

The play gave the Rangers a 4-1 lead and kick started a four-run inning. 

“Brandon Nimmo cares about every facet of the game,” Schumaker said. “Once he becomes a base runner, he trys to become the best base runner he can, and when he’s at third base, he got the proper secondary lead, he landed at the right time at the point of contact and he took off right as he read the ball hitting the barrel. That is what good baseball players do. They find ways to help you win.”

Nimmo did so before the game started, too, when he and Schumaker met to discuss the lineup and agreed on a change. The Rangers batted designated hitter Joc Pederson at leadoff Tuesday night with the intent to get a high on-base threat atop the order, and Nimmo, who’d hit first in every game he’d played this season and had been one of the club’s most productive hitters in that role, batted second. Pederson led off with a solo home run, and in the at-bat prior to Nimmo’s triple, saw nine pitches from Diamondbacks right-handed pitcher Zac Gallen. 

“Skip and I both believe that doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results is insanity,” Nimmo said. “We kind of talked about shaking things up a little bit and just trying to find another way. I’ve hit in a lot of different places, and for me, moving down one spot in the order doesn’t bother me. He talked about it, said ‘let me think it over,’ and when he made his decision I said ‘yeah, that sounds great, let’s roll with it.’ It’s just kind of trying to shake things up and we were able to push across seven runs today.”
