As the final school bells ring across Central Texas, families throughout the greater Fort Hood community are preparing for a well-earned summer break. With longer days, warmer weather and a renewed sense of freedom for our students, summer offers a valuable opportunity to reconnect, recharge and explore the many events and activities our region has to offer.
From Temple to Copperas Cove, Central Texas comes alive during the summer months with a wide range of family-friendly events. Whether you’re looking to stay active, enjoy the outdoors or simply spend quality time together, there is no shortage of options.
Outdoor recreation remains one of the most popular ways to beat the Texas heat; early mornings and late evenings are prime time for enjoying our local parks, lakes and trails with family and friends.
Belton Lake and Stillhouse Hollow Lake provide excellent venues for boating, fishing and picnicking, while local city parks offer splash pads and shaded playgrounds for younger children. These simple, accessible activities create lasting memories without the need for extensive travel.
Summer also brings a full calendar of community events. Weekly farmers’ markets in Temple and Belton offer fresh, local produce and a chance to support small businesses.
Outdoor concert series and movie nights in the park are staples across the region, providing free or low-cost entertainment for families. Events like Independence Day celebrations, complete with fireworks and parades, highlight the strong sense of community and patriotism that defines Central Texas.
For those seeking structured activities, numerous summer camps and programs are available both on and off post. Fort Hood’s Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation program offers youth sports, adventure camps and educational opportunities designed to keep children engaged and active. Local school districts and community organizations also host camps focused on STEM, arts and athletics, ensuring there is something for every interest.
Importantly, summer is also a time to emphasize safety. As temperatures climb, hydration, sun protection and heat awareness become critical. Parents are encouraged to ensure children take breaks, wear appropriate clothing and understand the risks associated with prolonged outdoor exposure. Additionally, with increased travel and outdoor activity, situational awareness remains key.
For our Soldiers and their families, summer provides a unique window to strengthen bonds that are often challenged by the demands of service. Whether it’s a weekend at the lake, an evening at a local event or simply a backyard barbecue, these moments contribute to resilience and readiness.
Central Texas offers more than just a place to serve, it offers a place to live, grow and thrive. As school ends and summer begins, I encourage every member of our community to take advantage of what surrounds us. Get outside, support local events and most importantly, spend time with those who matter most.
Enjoy the summer, stay safe and take care of one another.
