EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — The first P-TECH class from Irvin High School graduated on Wednesday, earning associate degrees from El Paso Community College.
A guidance counselor said 35 students received their associate degrees as part of the P-TECH program.
Guidance counselor Nakeia Steel said dozens of students also earned an industry certification as a clinical medical assistant or emergency medical technician.
“It’s a big development for me, especially because it started with something I didn’t know. Now I’m certified in it, I have an associate degree in it, and I’m proud of myself,” said Giselle Torres, a student in the program.
Torres said the program will benefit her as she pursues a career in radiology.
The P-TECH program is a work-based educational model aligned with regional workforce needs. Irvin High School’s P-TECH program focuses on the medical field.
