Just one week after launching, Plano’s newest transportation program is already seeing strong demand from residents across the city. City of Plano officials say the new Plano Rides by Via service completed 315 rides during its first week of operation, giving older adults easier access to medical appointments, libraries, recreation centers, grocery stores and other destinations throughout the community.

The city also reported that 772 users downloaded the app during the service’s opening week.

Designed To Help Older Adults Stay Connected

The new on-demand transportation program is currently available to Plano residents age 65 and older. Unlike fixed bus routes, Plano Rides operates as a shared, curb-to-curb service that allows riders to request trips directly through an app, online portal or phone call.

The service covers destinations throughout Plano, along with a 1.5-mile buffer area surrounding the city.

According to city officials, many of the most frequently used pickup and drop-off points during the first week included:


Senior living communities
Active adult housing developments
Libraries
Recreation centers
Grocery stores
Medical offices

The early usage trends highlight how transportation access can play a major role in helping older adults maintain independence and stay socially engaged.

The city says rider feedback during the first week has been especially strong. Of the riders who submitted reviews, 98.1% gave the service a five-star rating. Residents praised the convenience, friendliness of drivers and ease of the experience.

“Thank you for providing this much-needed service,” one rider shared in feedback provided by the city.

Another rider commented, “Thanks for the hassle-free ride!”

Free Rides Available Through June 4

To encourage residents to test the new system, Plano Rides is currently operating free of charge through June 4.

After the promotional period ends, the pricing structure will include:


$1.50 per ride
$3 unlimited daily pass
$1 for each additional passenger
Free rides for children age 5 and under

The service operates:


Monday through Friday: 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Saturday and Sunday: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Wheelchair-accessible vehicles are also available.

However, city officials noted the program is not intended to replace DART paratransit services.

As North Texas communities continue aging and expanding, cities are increasingly exploring flexible transportation models that go beyond traditional transit systems. Programs like Plano Rides are designed to reduce isolation, improve access to essential services and create more mobility options for residents who may no longer drive regularly.

Plano Mayor John Muns said the service is already helping residents move around the city safely and conveniently while staying connected to daily life and community activities.
