Midnight Rodeo, 7 Brew and more: Sunrise Mall reinvention accelerates

Also, the long-awaited multi-million dollar redevelopment project on that site is ready to move forward after delays.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Once upon a time, a trip to Sunrise Mall meant you were headed to the heart of Corpus Christi.

Families packed the food court. Teenagers crowded the arcades. Parking spaces were hard to find during the holiday rush. For decades, the mall stood as one of the city’s busiest gathering spots.

Storefronts emptied. Anchor tenants disappeared. Demolition crews arrived and then, for months, appeared to vanish. The silence surrounding the property left many residents wondering whether the long-promised redevelopment had quietly fallen apart.

But city officials insist that is not the case.

“The project is still on. It had several legalities with the properties it had to work through that has since been worked through.” said Yvette Wallace the Interim Development Services Director.

Wallace also told that the vision for the property remains ambitious: retail shops, restaurants, hotels, entertainment venues and even housing designed to transform the aging mall site into a modern mixed-use destination.

And now, there are visible signs that movement is finally returning.

At the corner of Airline and McArdle, construction crews are building a new Stripes convenience store. Another addition drawing attention is 7 Brew, the fast-growing drive-thru coffee chain that city officials say is headed to the property as well.

“The convenience store is going to go here. It’s currently being constructed at the corner of Airline and McArdle and we’ve had an early assistance meeting request from 7 Brew near the proximity to that convenience store right along Airline.”

One of the biggest draws may soon be nightlife and entertainment.

Midnight Rodeo is preparing to open its doors at the redevelopment site, bringing country music, dancing and a coffee-and-ice cream concept aimed at attracting a wide mix of customers.

Operations Manager Gordon Scott said the venue hopes to help spark energy back into an area many longtime residents remember as a major destination. “We are hoping to revitalize this part of town and hopefully fill up all of these parking spaces out here.”

Scott said the entertainment complex is only weeks away from opening.

For city leaders and developers, the stakes are high.

Sunrise Mall has long carried emotional weight for Corpus Christi residents who grew up shopping, socializing and spending weekends there. Redeveloping the property is about more than replacing empty buildings, it is about trying to restore activity to a part of town many people feel has faded over time.

Whether the full vision ultimately becomes reality remains to be seen.

But after years of uncertainty, stalled demolition and lingering doubts, Sunrise Mall is once again showing signs of life.
