Lubbock Sheriff’s Office K9 dies unexpectedly during training exercise

  • October 31, 2025

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – A K9 who served with the Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office unexpectedly passed away after suffering a medical emergency during a routine training exercise Monday.

K9 Arlo served the county since 2021. A Belgian Malinois, Arlo was certified as a dual-purpose dog and specialized in apprehension of offenders and the detection of narcotics.

After he was selected by the LSO, K9 Arlo was assigned to the Texas Anti-Gang Center with his handler.

LSO says he was the oldest active duty working dog at seven years old.

On October 28, during a routine training exercise with his handler, K9 Arlo was rushed to an emergency veterinarian but unfortunately passed away.

Arlo has been transferred to a specialist to determine his cause of death.

At his handler’s request, LSO held an honor walk for K9 Arlo on October 30. A final resting ceremony for Arlo has not yet been set.

Condolence cards can be sent to 712 Broadway, Lubbock County 79401.
