On Friday, Harris County leaders officially opened the Channelview Foundation of Hope, a new health and social services hub designed to help fill that gap.
The new facility, located along the East Freeway in Channelview, will operate as a one-stop center offering health care, workforce development, mental health support, housing navigation and other social services to residents in East Harris County.
“The Channelview community has had limited health-related services since Hurricane Harvey destroyed the only hospital in the area, and this facility is our answer to that deep absence,” Garcia told Chron in a statement.
The commissioner said the new center was designed to bring critical resources directly into the community rather than forcing residents to travel elsewhere for care and assistance.
“The Channelview Foundation of Hope will provide an array of services including health care, social services, workforce development, mental health support, housing navigation, and more—right here in the community that needs it most,” he added.
During Friday’s ribbon-cutting ceremony, Harris Co. Public Health also offered free mobile health services on-site, including immunizations, women’s health services, STD treatment, WIC support and benefit navigation. The Harris Co. Sheriff’s Office Homeless Outreach Team was also present to help connect residents with additional resources and services.
“It takes all of us working together to bring investment like this to our communities, and I am grateful to every partner, contractor, and community member who made this a reality,” Garcia concluded.
