New stores are popping up in San Antonio all the time, but one grocery chain seems to create a lot of buzz when it expands. Known for its in-house brand that offers a wide selection of meals, quirky snacks and more, Trader Joe’s is a favorite — evidenced by its constantly packed parking lots.

But is the company planning a new location in San Antonio? When MySA spotted a billboard for the chain on the city’s Northside, near the Highway 281 and Evans H-E-B store, we became curious.

Here’s what we know right now.

Trader Joe’s currently has three locations in San Antonio: one just north of Alamo Heights on Basse Road, in the Alamo Quarry shopping center; another on the Northside, off Loop 1604 and Highway 281; and a third off I-10 in the Huebner Oaks Shopping Center.

So could another one be on the way, or is that billboard just an advertisement for a somewhat close-by store, strategically placed near a rival grocery chain?

A spokesperson for Trader Joe’s told MySA via email, “We are actively looking at hundreds of neighborhoods across the country as we hope to open more new neighborhood stores each year. We do not have any current plans for additional stores in the San Antonio area.”

Regardless, TJ’s is expanding throughout Texas and the rest of the country. A store near the Houston-area communities of Cypress and Kingwood opened in December 2025, and another in the Dallas-Fort Worth suburb of McKinney debuted on May 7.

Additionally, more stores are in the works, with locations planned for the Austin-area city of Cedar Park and Spring, a Houston suburb.
