EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — El Paso Independent School District gathered to honor and recognize its top teachers and support staff at a special event earlier this week.
District officials gathered on Thursday, May 14 at the Starlight Event Center to recognize and honor its 2025-26 Teacher of the Year winners and Educational Support Personnel (ESP) of Year winners.
This year’s celebration embraced the theme “Classrooms are the Center of Our Universe.”
“These individuals represent the very best of El Paso ISD,” Superintendent Brian Lusk, Ph.D., said. “They inspire students, support families, uplift their colleagues, and remind us that education is ultimately about people and relationships. This night, we come together to celebrate the heart of our district.”
Here are this year’s winners, with descriptions of each provided by EPISD.
2025-26 Teachers of the Year
Elementary Teacher of the Year: Ramon Rosales, Lundy Elementary School
With more than two decades in education, Ramon Rosales has become a source of encouragement, discipline, and positivity for students at Lundy Elementary School. As a physical education teacher, he teaches far more than fitness, helping students build confidence, perseverance, teamwork, and self-belief both inside and outside the classroom.
Known for his servant leadership and deep commitment to the Lundy community, Rosales creates an environment where every student feels seen, supported, and motivated to succeed. Colleagues describe him as a role model whose energy and compassion leave a lasting impact on everyone around him.
Secondary Teacher of the Year: John Matthews, Jefferson Silva High School
For 17 years, John Matthews has helped students at Jefferson Silva High School discover their voice through music. As director of the school’s band program, Matthews has built more than musicians, he has built confidence, discipline, leadership, and lifelong memories for generations of students.
Whether leading rehearsals, mentoring student leaders, or supporting campus activities, Matthews is known for creating a culture where students feel connected and empowered. His passion for music education and unwavering dedication to his students have made him a beloved figure within the Jefferson Silva community and across the region’s music education landscape.
2025-26 Educational Support Personnel of the Year
Meghan Burford, Murphree PK-8
In just two years at Murphree PK-8, Meghan Burford has become a trusted presence for students and staff alike. As campus patrol, she does far more than maintain safety, she builds relationships, mentors students, and helps create a welcoming environment where children feel supported every day.
Her calm leadership, compassion, and student-centered approach have helped strengthen campus culture while ensuring students know there is always someone looking out for them. Colleagues say her positivity and dedication embody the spirit of service that defines El Paso ISD.
Veronica Renteria, Custodial Services
Before the first students arrive each morning, Veronica Renteria is already hard at work helping ensure Mesita Early Childhood Development Center is clean, welcoming, and ready for learning. As head custodian, she takes immense pride in creating an environment where students, families, and staff feel cared for from the moment they walk through the doors.
Known for her servant-hearted leadership and tireless work ethic, Renteria consistently goes above and beyond to support her campus community. Whether assisting staff, supporting special events, or stepping in wherever needed, she approaches every task with humility, kindness, and professionalism.
