On Saturday afternoon, the Texas baseball team closed out its regular season on a high note.
Boosted by a six-run fourth inning, Texas recorded a 12-7 win over Missouri in its regular-season finale at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. With Saturday’s win and this week’s series sweep of the Tigers, UT earned a second-place finish in the SEC standings.

Texas (40-12, 19-10) pulled starting pitcher Ruger Riojas after just five pitches on Saturday so the Longhorns needed to lean on their bullpen. Brody Walls, Cal Higgins, Cody Howard, Brett Crossland and Thomas Burns all pitched in relief against Missouri (23-30, 6-24), and freshman right-hander Kaleb Rogers closed out the game with a strikeout after making his collegiate debut with two outs in the ninth inning.
The Longhorns were led offensively by Anthony Pack Jr. and Carson Tinney, who were responsible for six of UT’s 14 hits. Tinney drove in three runs on Saturday and recorded 10 RBIs over the course of this series.
Texas is off until its upcoming opener at the SEC Tournament in Hoover, Ala. As the No. 2 seed, Texas won’t play its quarterfinal game in the 16-team competition until Friday at 3 p.m. CT.

Down to its last three outs, Missouri has the top of its batting order due up in the ninth inning. Thomas Burns will remain on the mound for Texas.
It took nearly four innings, but Missouri finally got to Texas reliever Cody Howard. With two outs in the eighth inning, Missouri scored on Mateo Serna’s two-run double and later brought Serna home on pinch-hitter Tyler Macon’s infield single.
Texas pulled Howard after Macon’s base hit, and Texas reliever Brett Crossland then hit a Missouri batter and issued a walk to load the bases. A two-run double by Chris Patterson made Crossland pay for those free passes, but UT reliever Thomas Burns entered the game and got a groundout to strand runners on second base and third base.

With six outs to go in its regular season, Texas still leads by six runs at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. Cody Howard will remain on the mound after facing the minimum amount of batters over the past three innings.

Cody Howard has had a nice appearance out of the Texas bullpen. The fourth player to pitch for Texas this afternoon, Howard has retired all six batters that he’s faced so far. This is just the fifth appearance this season for the fifth-year right-hander.

Texas jumped on Missouri during the fourth inning while taking a six-run lead. Anthony Pack Jr. and Carson Tinney each drove in their second runs of the day, and both of those players were later brought home by Adrian Rodriguez and Temo Becerra. The Longhorns later added two more runs when Missouri couldn’t field a two-out bloop off of Josh Livingston’s bat.
Texas had a chance to distance itself even further from Missouri. But what seemed like an RBI single from Dariyan Pendergrass turned into an inning-ending out when Ethan Mendoza was thrown out at second base before Livingston could touch the home plate.

The second homer of Missouri’s afternoon has tied this game. This solo shot belonged to Pierre Seals, who took Cal Higgins deep out of the No. 9 spot in the Missouri batting order. Higgins is the third pitcher used by Texas this afternoon.
After wasting a scoring opportunity in the first inning, the Texas bats got going in the second session. Anthony Pack Jr. and Carson Tinney both contributed RBI singles. The Longhorns chased Missouri starter Keyler Gonzalez, who allowed three hits and walked five batters today, from the game in the second inning.

During the second inning, Tinney also swiped the 100th base of UT’s season. Texas last stole 100 bases in 2005.
Texas was unable to take advantage of an erratic start from Missouri’s Keyler Gonzalez, who walked three of the first four batters that he faced. But with the bases loaded and one out, Ashton Larson struck out and Casey Borba grounded into an inning-ending fielder’s choice.

Missouri claimed its second lead of the weekend on Blaize Ward’s solo homer in the first inning, but that was a secondary storyline at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. Starting pitcher Ruger Riojas threw just five pitches before he was pulled by Texas coach Jim Schlossnagle and replaced on the mound by freshman Brody Walls.
Texas has not yet officially announced why Riojas exited Saturday’s game. Riojas is a senior, so there is a possibility that he was starting for ceremonial reasons since this game doesn’t have a lot of significance and Texas has been cautious with the right-hander’s workload over the past few weeks.
