The Texas Hill Country is known for its scenic outdoor paradises, but some spots are just extra special. Whether you’re a fan of traditional tent camping, roughing it, or straight-up “glamping,” the River’s Edge Campground in Johnson City might be one campsite that you should put on your radar, at least according to the experts.
Located along the Pedernales River, the 100-acre RV campground is surrounded by “majestic oaks and wide open spaces,” a short drive from Hill Country hotspot Fredericksburg.
The scenic campground is just an hour outside of both San Antonio and Austin. Campers there enjoy access to basketball, pickleball, sand volleyball and cornhole courts; resort-style swimming and hot tubs; a campfire ring and RV and tent sites.
Perhaps the most exciting amenity, however, is the themed cabin that River’s Edge is known for. The Whitetail Cabin offers a traditional Lincoln-log-style cabin and provides an idyllic camping experience. But the real star of the show is the Western Wagon, which looks like an authentic pioneer wagon and comes with a private patio, a picnic table and firepit.
“This recognition means the world to us,” owner Alanya Berthiaume told MySA.
She and her husband, Stuart, own the property and built it with the help of their three children, who grew up camping. She said the family passion project was designed to be the kind of place they would have been thrilled to discover themselves, and their children were deeply involved in building the facility from the ground up.
“River’s Edge Campground was created with the vision of offering the best of both worlds: an authentic, nature-focused camping experience with trails, trees, and space, paired with resort-style amenities in the Texas Hill Country,” she said.
Each year, the campground owners association celebrates parks in three separate award categories: Park of the Year Under 125 Sites, Park of the Year 125-plus Sites and Glamping Resort of the Year.
The association named Lagoon Ranch Luxury RV and Cabin Resort in Onalaska, Texas, the best large campground in the state this year. In North Texas, Camp Quitcherbichin won Glamping Resort of the Year.
