It’s been a brutal few years for H-Town’s restaurant scene, with hundreds of closures. This year is no exception, due to a slowed economy and landlord disputes.

HOUSTON — Houston is known as a foodie town with a rich selection of great restaurants representing all types of cuisine.

While dozens of new restaurants open in Greater Houston every year, many others, unfortunately, shutter. The Texas Restaurant Association is tracking media coverage of prominent closures and said at least 71 eateries have closed so far this year in the region. That does not count many others that may not have gotten media coverage.

Editor’s note: The above video originally aired on October 8.

The Houston Business Journal compiled a list of some of the most notable closures this year.

October

Kim Son, EaDo

One of Houston’s most beloved family-owned restaurants served its last meal on October 12 after more than four decades.

In a heartfelt social media post on Tuesday, Kim Son Restaurant announced that its Jefferson Street in EaDo would close because of the ongoing I-45 expansion project.

The Bellaire location remains open.

This Is It, Third Ward

Iconic soul food restaurant This Is It closed its Third Ward location in October after more than six decades. The Humble location remains open.

Trump Burger, Galleria area

Five months after it first opened, the Houston burger joint that pays homage to President Donald Trump with memorabilia and “Trump” stamped on the burgers closed — at least temporarily.

As we reported back in August, owner Roland Beainy, a Lebanese immigrant, is facing deportation, according to United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials.

He’s also been embattled in lawsuits and legal battles.

Beainy didn’t respond to multiple phone calls or text messages.
