A Northside Independent School District high school teacher and coach has been arrested on allegations he had a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student.
Chad Allen Rodriguez, 38, was arrested Saturday and charged with having an improper relationship with a student, a second-degree felony. He is in custody at the Bexar County jail with bail set at $50,000.
He was placed on “immediate administrative leave” from his position as a physics and astronomy teacher at John Jay High School, where he also coaches football and track and field, district spokesperson Barry Perez confirmed in a statement.
The allegations came to light after a student reported seeing Rodriguez and a 17-year-old female student alone in his classroom Thursday, according to an arrest affidavit. He was her astronomy teacher and coach.
When police spoke to the victim, she said she met Rodriguez in October and that their relationship turned sexual.
“During the beginning of the school year, they would make eye contact in the classroom and flirt,” the affidavit says. “As they began to get to know each other they started to kiss in the classroom.”
About one month later, they began having sexual intercourse in the classroom. On one occasion, he picked her up in his vehicle and drove it to the school parking lot, where they had sexual intercourse.
They exchanged phone numbers and sent nude photos and videos of themselves, according to the affidavit.
Surveillance footage from the school confirmed the student’s report that Rodriguez and the girl were alone in his classroom.
“While we cannot share specific details due to the ongoing police investigation, NISD and Jay High School are cooperating fully with law enforcement,” Perez said. “Our priority remains the safety and well-being of our students, and we are committed to maintaining a secure, supportive environment during this time.”
