The University of Houston announced Sunday that longtime baseball coach Todd Whitting will not be offered a new contract.
Whitting was with the team for 16 seasons, during which he led the Cougars to 498 wins and had a .558 winning percentage, according to the university. Seventy-one of those wins were against nationally ranked opponents, including against No. 2 Texas earlier this year.
“After careful evaluation, we have decided to make a change in the leadership of our baseball program,” UH athletics director Eddie Nuñez said in a statement. “We cannot thank coach Whitting and his family enough for their efforts and wish him and his family well in their next endeavors.”

As of Monday, Whitting had not publicly commented on the university’s decision.
The announcement comes after UH’s season-ending, 8-2 victory against Wake Forest on Friday. The Cougars were 24-31 overall and 7-23 in Big 12 Conference games this season.
According to the university, Whitting is a two-time ABCA Regional Coach of the Year, having coached 13 All-Americans, 54 All-Conference selections and 49 MLB draft picks, including first-round pick Seth Romero.
Nuñez said the university will immediately begin a national search for its next head baseball coach.
