Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi’s Theatre on the Island camp offers immersive acting experiences for kids ages 9-14.
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi is inviting young performers to take center stage this summer through its Theatre on the Island Summer Camp.
The program is designed for children ages 9 through 14 and allows students to explore acting, storytelling, and creativity while working alongside university theatre faculty and college theatre majors.
Thomas Oldham with TAMU-CC joined 3NEWS First Edition to talk about what makes the camp different from others offered during the summer.
“Because they’re supported by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, they are fully engaged with our university facilities, our university faculty like myself and our university students who are some of the best and brightest in all of Texas,” Oldham said.
Two camp sessions will be offered in June. The first session, running June 1-5, focuses on classic stories inspired by Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, and The Wizard of Oz. The second session, June 8-12, features “Twisted Fairytales,” which puts a creative spin on familiar stories.
Oldham said campers can sign up for one session or both at a discounted price. Throughout the camp, students will collaborate to create, rehearse, and perform original scenes while building teamwork and communication skills.
“We teach all the skills that everybody needs to succeed no matter what job or career they eventually gain,” Oldham said. “Communication, thinking on your feet, collaboration and creatively solving problems in the moment.”
The camps run from 9 a.m. to about 3 p.m., with optional early drop-off and late pickup available for an additional fee. Parents are asked to send campers with a lunch and enthusiasm for learning and performing.
