The wait for Italian beef sandwiches, Chicago-style hot dogs and crinkle-cut cheese fries in the San Antonio area is officially coming to an end as Chicago-based chain Portillo’s has announced the opening date of its first San Antonio-area restaurant in Schertz.
A marketing coordinator for Portillo’s confirmed to MySA via email on Monday, May 18, that the chain is “currently planning our grand opening of Schertz for June 9th.”
The soon-to-open Portillo’s location in Schertz has been under construction for months as part of the growing Schertz Station development near I-35. Recent activity at the site, including newly installed exterior signage, completed drive-thru lanes and outdoor patio work, signaled the opening was rapidly approaching.
Known for its Chicago street food staples, Portillo’s has built a cultlike following around its slow-roasted Italian beef sandwiches, which are thinly sliced and served on French bread dipped in savory gravy made from the chain’s longtime seasoning blend.
The restaurant is also widely recognized for its fully loaded Chicago-style hot dogs topped with mustard, relish, onions, tomatoes, pickle spears, sport peppers and celery salt. Beyond its savory menu, Portillo’s has become equally famous for indulgent comfort food favorites like its homemade chocolate cake, chopped salads and crinkle-cut cheese fries served with melted cheddar cheese sauce.
Founded in the Chicago area in 1963, Portillo’s has steadily expanded across the country in recent years, drawing loyal fans well beyond the Midwest. The Schertz location marks the chain’s first restaurant in the San Antonio region and one of several major restaurant additions reshaping the fast-growing corridor between San Antonio and New Braunfels. A location in New Braunfels is also in the works.
But once open in Schertz, the restaurant will join nearby tenants at Schertz Station, including Dave’s Hot Chicken, Chipotle and CAVA.
