The National Weather Service on Tuesday, May 19, issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the southern Edwards Plateau and parts of the Texas Hill Country, northwest of San Antonio.
Forecasters say a cold front moving through the area could threaten several major cities later today, bringing the potential for scattered tennis ball-sized hail, wind gusts up to 70 mph and frequent lightning strikes. Affected areas include Kerrville, Kingsland, Junction, Sonora, Del Rio, San Angelo and Fort Stockton.
The watch, issued at 4 p.m. Tuesday, is in effect until 11 p.m.
According to the NWS, storms are expected to hit the Texas Hill Country and parts of Austin between 7 p.m. and 1 a.m.
In San Antonio and South Central Texas, storms are expected between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m. The weather agency is advising residents to turn on weather alerts, as the storm could bring damaging winds, large hail and heavy rain to several parts of the state.
Forecasters said earlier this week that a weak cold front developing over North Texas is expected to move south through the Panhandle late Tuesday night.
The system is then expected to move into San Antonio and surrounding areas. San Antonio, Austin, Boerne and nearby towns are currently under a “moderate” risk for severe storms.
