Vaughn “Donnie” Hawkins was the third child born to Mae Pearl and Sgt. Jewel Hawkins on May 11, 1949 (Mother’s Day), at Madigan General Hospital in Tacoma, Washington. Vaughn was the third of fourteen children. Vaughn attended public schools in the Temple Independent School District. He attended Phyllis Wheatley Elementary School, Dunbar Junior High School, and graduated from Dunbar High School in May 1967. In August 1967, Vaughn began attending Jarvis Christian College in Hawkins, Texas. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry with a minor in Mathematics in May 1971. While attending Jarvis Christian College, Vaughn demonstrated outstanding leadership abilities. As a freshman, he was elected to the Jarvis Student Council, and during his senior year, he served as President of the Men’s Senate. Vaughn was also recognized for his academic excellence, earning placement on the Dean’s Honors List during both his junior and senior years. In March 1981, Vaughn married Joyce Ann Thomas of Birmingham, Alabama. To this union were born two beautiful daughters, Cherri and Brandi. Vaughn was also the proud grandfather of Kelsey Ridley and Logan Vaughn Podlaski of Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
