In Tuesday’s (5/19) Express News (San Antonio, Texas), Deborah Martin writes, “Jeffrey Kahane, who resigned from the San Antonio Philharmonic in February, is returning to the city this fall to lead Harmonium of Texas…. Kahane, who is based in California but has a long association with the San Antonio classical music community, said, ‘I recognize that some people would understandably say how is this even possible? I do think it’s important to make clear that this is not about me. I didn’t create this myself. This was very much an effort that started with and includes some wonderful people in the community who saw the need for something like this.’ The guiding idea, he said, is to create more opportunities for area musicians, including students, and music lovers. Kahane … served as music director of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra for 20 years and teaches at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music. As a pianist, he has been guest soloist with major orchestras … He has played or conducted on dozens of albums … Harmonium [is] slated to make it debut Oct. 2 and has a full season mapped out.” The San Antonio Philharmonic has been facing financial and organizational challenges in recent years.
