A 26-year-old San Antonio man has been charged with murder after police said he shot and killed his uncle, wrapped his body in trash bags and hid it in a recycling bin in the backyard of their East Side home.
Aquiminee La Roy Crawford is charged with murder in the death of Derrick Cornell Crawford, 52, on or about May 9 at a home in the 100 block of Sterling Drive, according to an arrest warrant affidavit. A judge set Aquiminee Crawford’s bail at $250,000.
San Antonio police were called to the home around 9:30 p.m. May 17 after a 911 caller reported that someone had killed his uncle and that the body was in the backyard, the affidavit states.
Officers found Derrick Crawford wrapped in black plastic inside a recycling bin. He had multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at 9:33 p.m., the affidavit states.
Investigators later spoke with Aquiminee Crawford, who admitted he shot his uncle inside the home on May 9. He said he was upset by a comment his uncle made to him.
Aquiminee Crawford told detectives that he grabbed a handgun from his bedroom and shot Derrick Crawford, then wrapped the body in black trash bags and placed it in the recycling bin.
He told investigators that the gun used to kill his uncle, a clear plastic baggy full of spent shell casings, and his uncle’s phone were in his bedroom.
Police searched the home and found blood spatter on walls and a ceiling, and a sofa cushion that appeared to be drenched in blood.
The victim’s mother told investigators the family had been looking for Derrick Crawford since the previous Saturday.
