Texas is about to become the newest home of the “Grey’s Anatomy” universe.
ABC has officially ordered a new spin-off of the hit medical drama franchise set in rural West Texas, Deadline first reported. It marks a major shift for the series, which has spent more than 20 years rooted in Seattle and other West Coast settings.
The untitled spinoff will center on a new group of doctors and is described as an edgy drama about a team at a rural West Texas medical center, “the last chance for care before miles of nowhere.” The series will be co-created by “Grey’s Anatomy” creator and executive producer Shonda Rhimes.
This new project marks the fourth series in the “Grey’s Anatomy” franchise, including the spinoffs like “Private Practice” and “Station 19.”
ABC has given the series a straight-to-series order, meaning a full-season commitment without filming a pilot first. The drama comes from Rhimes and “Grey’s Anatomy” showrunner Meg Marinis and is produced by Shondaland and 20th Television. Rhimes, Marinis, Betsy Beers and “Grey’s Anatomy” star Ellen Pompeo — best known for playing Meredith Grey — will executive produce. The series is set to premiere in the 2026-27 season during the 2027 midseason lineup.
The new series has Texas roots. Marinis is a Houston native and a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin. She started her career as a writer’s assistant during “Grey’s” third season and spent two decades working her way from production assistant and medical researcher to executive producer and showrunner.
“I am incredibly excited to expand the Grey’s Anatomy universe,” Marinis said. “This opportunity will bring new characters and stories to life that will embody the same heart, emotion and connection audiences have loved from Grey’s for more than two decades — all set in my home state of Texas.”
She added, “I am so grateful to Shonda Rhimes for creating this dynamic world and feel so fortunate that I get to be a part of it.”
In an interview with Deadline last fall, Marinis said she knew several Texas families who lost children in the Camp Mystic tragedy. She said the losses affected her emotionally and led her to rewrite Link’s goodbye call speech for the “Grey’s Anatomy” Season 22 premiere.
