TEXAS (KAUZ) – As holiday travelers start hitting the road today in record numbers, AAA Texas said that Memorial Day weekend gas prices are the highest they’ve been in four years.
“Millions of Texans are preparing to hit the road for Memorial Day weekend, and they’ll be doing so with the highest holiday pump prices in four years.”
Current prices are close to what drivers were paying 4 years ago, when the Texas regular unleaded average on Memorial Day was $4.24. According to AAA Texas reports, pump prices are likely to remain elevated as the summer travel season gets underway, as gasoline demand is on the rise, and the Strait of Hormuz is closed.
“Higher fuel demand, elevated crude oil prices and ongoing global supply concerns are keeping upward pressure on prices as the summer travel season begins. Drivers can help manage costs by shopping around for the lowest gas prices, combining errands, avoiding aggressive driving and making sure their vehicle is properly maintained before a road trip.”
The statewide gas price average in Texas is $4.09 per gallon for regular unleaded fuel, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch.
That price is eight cents more when compared to this day last week and is $1.30 more per gallon compared to this day last year.
