Another event at AT&T Stadium, another curtain controversy.
Jerry’s World — technically called “Dallas Stadium” for the next few weeks while FIFA takes over for nine World Cup matches — has always had one glaring flaw: the glare from the sun shining into its giant windows.
For years, the Cowboys and opposing teams have had to battle the Texas sun peaking into the stadium, a flaw that Cowboys players themselves have spoken out against in recent years.
This summer, FIFA is taking no chances and will drop the curtains for the June 25 match between Japan and Sweden, according to a report from Front Office Sports.
The group stage match is slated to kick off at 6 p.m., which should be catching the end of the sun’s scheduled peak into the stadium’s windows. Two other matches could be affected by the sun with 3 p.m. start times, the Netherlands vs. Japan on June 14 and England vs. Croatia on June 17.
The curtains have been dropped for similar non-Cowboys events in the past, including big concerts like Taylor Swift and for the Jake Paul-Mike Tyson fight in 2024.
After missing a wide-open catch against the Philadelphia Eagles in 2024, Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb pointed to the sun’s effect on the play.
“I couldn’t see the ball,” Lamb said. “Couldn’t see the ball, at all. The sun [was in the way].” When asked if he favored curtains, he was quick to answer, “Yes. One thousand percent.”
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has been defensive about the topic in the past, insisting that it’s something that both teams have to deal with and that Dallas knows well in advance of the issues it could face in a game.
“By the way, we know where the sun is going to be when we flip the coin,” Jones said in 2024. “So, we do know where the damn sun is going to be in our own stadium. Let’s just tear the damn stadium down and build another one. Are you kidding me?
“Everybody has got the same thing. Every team that comes in here has the same issues. They know where the sun is going to be. I’m saying, the world knows where the sun is. You get to know that almost a year in advance. Someone asked me about the sun. What about the sun? Where’s the moon?”
