EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — El Paso County Judge Ricardo A. Samaniego is set to officially declare June 13 and 14 as “Viva La Lucha Weekend” in El Paso County, recognizing the cultural and community impact of lucha libre and a growing annual charity event tied to the sport.

The resolution will be presented during a Commissioners Court meeting scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Monday, June 1, at the Enrique Moreno County Courthouse in downtown El Paso.

County officials said the designation celebrates the third annual Viva La Lucha 5K race, which will take place June 13 at Sunland Park Racetrack & Casino in Sunland Park, New Mexico.

Organizers say the event combines fitness, entertainment and cultural appreciation by bringing together residents, businesses, nonprofit groups, educators, athletes, artists and veteran organizations.

Participants in the race will also have the opportunity to attend a live professional wrestling event later that day.

Proceeds from the Viva La Lucha 5K will benefit League of Heroes, a nonprofit organization that supports youth programs, literacy initiatives, STEM engagement activities, community service projects and educational outreach efforts throughout the Borderland region.

Representatives from the El Paso Sports Commission, Viva La Lucha organizers, Lucha League Wrestling, La Esquina Ruda Restaurant in Ciudad Juárez, local sportscasters and professional wrestlers are expected to attend the June 1 presentation and receive the resolution.

Organizers say the recognition highlights lucha libre’s longstanding cultural significance within Hispanic and Mexican American communities, where the sport has served as both athletic competition and storytelling tradition for generations.

The event will also feature a public display of memorabilia from WWE, AEW and Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide.

Attendees will be invited to view the collection, take photographs and share their experiences on social media.

Samaniego encouraged wrestling fans attending the Commissioners Court meeting to wear wrestling masks, shirts and championship belts in support of the celebration.

The meeting will take place in the Alicia Chacon Commissioners Courtroom on the third floor of the Enrique Moreno County Courthouse, 500 E. San Antonio Ave.
