Senator John Cornyn stopped in Corpus Christi on Friday for a Get Out The Vote event as early voting wrapped up ahead of Texas’s May 26 primary runoff election.

The event marked the final stop of Cornyn’s statewide tour before Election Day on Tuesday and included several law enforcement leaders and elected officials from across South Texas.

Among those attending were former Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steve McCraw, J.C. Hooper, Nueces County Judge Connie Scott, National Border Patrol Council President Paul Perez, CLEAT President Scott Leeton, and State Rep. Denise Villalobos.

Cornyn used the event to encourage Texans to vote before the end of early voting on Friday evening.

“The best insurance is to vote today,” Cornyn said. “There’s a lot at stake.”

The senator said turnout in the primary earlier this year was low and urged voters who skipped the March primary to still participate in the runoff.

“A full three-quarters of registered voters in Texas can still vote in this runoff,” Cornyn said.

Cornyn also spoke about the importance of public safety while surrounded by local and state law enforcement officials.

“I’ve made it my job to support them because they put themselves between us in harm’s way to keep us safe,” Cornyn said.

The Republican senator also discussed several Coastal Bend issues during reporters’ questions following the event, including the region’s ongoing water supply concerns.

Cornyn said he supports desalination efforts and believes federal resources could help local leaders once plans move forward.

“The desalination solution is, I think, a creative one, and I certainly support it,” Cornyn said. “We stand by ready to do anything and everything we can to help.”

He also highlighted recent visits to the Port of Corpus Christi and the Corpus Christi Army Depot, saying both remain important economic drivers for the region.

The campaign stop came during Law Enforcement Appreciation Month and days before Republican voters decide the runoff race on Tuesday.
