EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — Drivers may soon start paying more at the repair shop, not just at the pump.

Rising motor oil costs and possible shortages are beginning to impact drivers across the country, including here in El Paso.

According to reporting from USA TODAY, supply chain disruptions tied to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East are tightening supplies of certain motor oils, especially low viscosity synthetic oils commonly used in hybrid and fuel-efficient vehicles.

Local auto shops say they’re already feeling the impact.

We’re looking at 70 to 80 dollars for the synthetic oil change,” said Lorenzo Anguiano, general mechanic manager at M&M Auto Care. “Last year, the synthetic oil change was around 50 to 60 dollars.

Anguiano said rising oil barrel prices are driving up costs for repair shops and customers alike. He said barrels that once cost his shop around $450 are now closer to $700.

“We saw that the price kept increasing,” Anguiano said. “There was no way of keeping it the same.”

UTEP economics professor Tom Fullerton said the issue goes far beyond gasoline prices.

“Anytime oil prices go up, that raises the cost of operating equipment, including automobiles,” Fullerton said.

Fullerton said attacks impacting the Strait of Hormuz — one of the world’s major oil shipping routes — have reduced petroleum exports and refinery production, creating disruptions throughout the global supply chain.

He warns that drivers could continue seeing higher maintenance costs for at least the next 18 months.

Local drivers said they’ve already noticed the impact on their wallets.

“It’s hitting the wallet, definitely hitting the wallet,” said El Paso driver Robert Stratrivas. “But you need to maintain your vehicle so you’re going to have to pay for it.”

As prices continue rising, Anguiano said some customers are now turning to do-it-yourself oil changes at home to save money.

“We have seen a decrease in customers because they’re now doing the oil changes themselves,” Anguiano said.

Still, experts warn that delaying regular maintenance could lead to even more expensive repairs down the road.

Hybrid and fuel-efficient vehicles could see some of the biggest impacts as specialized synthetic oils become harder to find.
