A nickname for a Houston suburb seems to be catching on, to the deep confusion of residents. But consider this before you sincerely refer to Katy as “Killa Katy” because of Drake—it’s a joke.

Some people want their city, town, or suburb to be the roughest, toughest place in the land, so a rapper mentioning Katy is all they need to embellish their bona fides. It’s also an instance of combiner alliteration; “Killa Katy” kind of rolls off the tongue.

It’s a joke Houstonians use about a popular suburb, nothing more. It’s an ironic naming, not something to be taken seriously, but with all things related to Drake, it seems to have taken on a life of its own on social media

“The only dangerous thing in Katy are the property taxes,” one commenter joked.

“KATHERINE TX? Absolutely not lol,” another said.

“I had to watch this twice to realize she was talking about Katy, Texas, and not a person named Katy… that’s how safe it is I didn’t even consider it,” another chimed in. 

Drake did not even mention Katy in his latest buffet of songs from his way-too-much three-album drop. He mentions “K D” as in Houston Rockets star Kevin Durant, who is a close friend of Drake, on his song “Q&A” from his Maid of Honor album. Maybe people heard KD and thought the Canadian rapper mentioned Katy again. 

“Me and KD got way too much cheese,” Drake raps on the song. 

Drake perfectly described Katy as exactly what she is in the song “Desires”—a safe place to stash a woman he cares about to take her away from the street life. Even Drake knows Katy is affluent and worry-free, living for the most part with proximity to the big city.

Here’s what he said back in 2020 in the track off of Dark Lane Demo Tapes: 

“I should have put you somewhere where no one could find you”

“Mansion out in the sticks with nothin’ around you”

“Katy, Texas, Dallas, Texas, you know, a different environment (Ayy)”

The whole “Killa Katy” thing is a similar vibe to when Texas State University thought Drake made “TSU” about them when it was clearly about Texas Southern University.
