Judge sentences father in dog attack death of daughter

The man convicted in the death of his 3-year-old daughter learned his sentence Friday.Warren Houston was found guilty of disregarding the danger of pit bulls when he gave them access to his daughter, Kingsley Wright. Prosecutors say the dogs killed Wright in 2024, saying the dogs were improperly secured in a broken cage, and that Wright should not have been left alone near them.The damage Houston caused was “catastrophic and irreversible,” Judge Virginia Tallent said in court Friday.Tallent proceeded to sentence Houston to 5-7 years in prison, saying Wright completely depended on him for safety.Houston had recently learned the girl was his daughter and had just reconnected with her.The dogs broke out in the middle of the night and attacked the girl.Assistant Prosecutor Elyse Deters read a victim’s impact statement from the girl’s mother, Gina Smith.”Kingsley’s life was abruptly and violently taken away because of Warren Houston’s recklessness, carelessness, and glaring indifference toward Kingsley’s safety and well-being,” the statement said, in part. “Every morning is a new nightmare for me.”Houston did not speak Friday. His attorney told the judge that he was very cooperative with the investigation and that he, too, lost a daughter.Houston indicated he will appeal. It sounds like a civil suit could be coming from Kinglsey’s mother.
