Maui police say a 47-year-old man from Texas died in a solo crash Thursday evening on Makena Road.
Police said at about 5:35 p.m., the man was driving south on Makena in a black 2024 BMW X5 when it crossed the center line, veered off the road, and collided with rocks along the left shoulder. The car then went back on the the road and veered off the right shoulder, where it struck additional rocks, went airborne, and rolled over, landing on its roof.
The incident occurred on Makena about 1.1 miles south of Oneloa Beach South Road.
Police said the man was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene. His identity is being withheld to give family time to notify extended family and friends of his death.
The man’s passenger, a 46-year-old Texas woman, was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.
The man was not wearing a seat belt, but his passenger was, police said.

Police said speed is considered a factor, but that the involvement of alcohol and drugs is still under investigation.
This was Maui County’s 15th traffic fatality this year compared to 13 at the same time last year.
