Locally beloved comedian Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias will perform a San Antonio benefit show this Sunday to combat food insecurity as the White House prepares to cut off federal food aid for tens of millions.
Iglesias announced the show in Facebook post, asking fans to bring five cans of food to Laugh out Loud Comedy Club between 10 a.m. and noon on Sunday, Nov. 2. The first 350 people to do so will receive wristbands good for admission to a 3 p.m. show, which will include his standup plus appearances by special guests he didn’t identify.
“All the food will be donated to the San Antonio Food Bank, who will be disbursing that food to people in need,” Iglesias said. “And, believe me, a lot of people need that food.”
Although Iglesias didn’t mention the government shutdown, the show comes as the Trump administration prepares to stop funding the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, otherwise known as SNAP or food stamps, on Nov. 1. In Texas alone, 3.5 million people, around half of them children, rely on SNAP for groceries monthly.
In his Facebook message, the rotund San Diego-born comic got in a self-deprecating jab at his much-ballyhooed love for San Antonio’s Tex-Mex cuisine.
“Bring the food!” he said. “Not for me this time!”
Five cans of food, 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2, Laugh Out Loud Comedy Club, 618 NW Loop 410, (210) 541-8805, lolsanantonio.com.
