Texas softball beat Arizona State 5-0 in Game 3 of the Austin Super Regional Sunday at McCombs Field and keeps its dreams of a second straight national championship alive.

The No. 6 Longhorns (47-11) will open the Women’s College World Series Thursday in Oklahoma City against Tennessee.

Teagan Kavan throws her fourth complete-game shutout of the postseason as Texas advances to the WCWS for the third straight season. Tournament time is Teagan time for the defending national champions. Up next? A meeting with Tennessee in Game 1 of the WCWS in Oklahoma City.

Katie Stewart delivers again. This time, the Texas slugger laces a 2-RBI double into centerfield. She’s now 2-for-4 with four RBIs while solidifying her All-American status. Now, it’s all about pitcher Teagan Kavan, the Longhorn defense and possibly the bullpen. Can Texas get three more outs and avoid any late drama?

Another quick inning from Texas starter Teagan Kavan, who is trying to nail down her sixth complete-game shutout of the season. She’s given up four hits with four strikeouts and a pair of walks, and she has the Longhorns within three outs of a third straight trip to the WCWS.

ASU reliever Meika Lauppe strands Texas SS Vivi Martinez at third. The book on Kenzie Brown: 4⅓ innings, six hits, three runs, five strikeouts, one walk.

An epic at-bat by Texas SS Vivi Martinez lasts 17 pitches and ends with an RBI triple into right field that scores Kayden Henry. That gives Texas some needed insurance, and it means the end of ASU starter Kenzie Brown. Meika Lauppe enters the game for ASU.

Texas 2B Leighann Goode handles a tough bounce for the second out, and Teagan Kavan handles the rest in a 1-2-3 inning.Kavan has settled into cruise control with 67 pitches.

Kenzie Brown retires the Texas side in order. Let’s see if Texas starter Teagan Kavan can keep the potent Sun Devil lineup in check, and let’s see if and when Texas coach Mike White turns to reliever Citlaly Gutierrez.

Arizona State’s Emily Schepp almost cuts the lead in half with a two-out bomb to left, but Texas LF Kaiah Altmeyer tracks the ball and makes a jumping catch at the wall. Yannixa Acuna follows with a triple, but Texas starter forces a groundout from Tiare Ho-Ching for the third out. Credit Altmeyer with backing up third on the Schepp triple, because an errant relay throw would have allowed Schepp to score.

Texas slugger Katie Stewart lines a single into center field that just eludes a diving Kaylee Pond, and Ashton Maloney and Jaycie Nichols both cross home plate. But Texas leaves the bags juiced after Leighann Goode grounds out to third to end the inning. The Longhorns entered the inning without a hit against Kenzie Brown; they had four in the frame.

Texas starter Teagan Kavan needs just seven pitches to send the Sun Devils down in order. That’s her first 1-2-3 inning of the game.

Kenzie Brown gets Hannah Wells looking for her second strikeout, and the ASU ace lets out a scream. She’s only thrown 18 pitches through two inning. But the biggest yell comes from the crowd after the PA lets the folks know that OU has been eliminated by underdog Mississippi State. The Bulldogs and Texas Tech have qualified for the WCWS over the past hour, which means the winner of this game claims the final WCWS spot.

The Sun Devils are getting some contact against Texas ace Teagan Kavan but haven’t scored. Emily Schepp and Yannixa Acuna smack back-to-back one-out hits, which helps prompt a visit from pitching coach Pattie Ruth Taylor. Kavan then walks Tiare Ho-Ching to load the bags with two outs but gets a soft groundout from Tanya Windle to end the frame. 

ASU starter Kenzie Brown plunks Kayden Henry to lead off the game, but the Sun Devils get Vivi Martinez to hit into a double play to end the frame. No hits, no one left on for Texas.

Texas coach Mike White will start ace Teagan Kavan for the third straight game while Arizona State coach Megan Bartlett will start ace Kenzie Brown for the second time this series after she picked up a complete-game win in Game 1. Kavan only threw two innings in Game 2 and gave up two runs and three hits while Brown tossed three innings in Game 2 and allowed five hits and two earned runs. For the season, Kavan is 24-5 with a 2.56 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP and has 225 strikeouts and 54 walks in 188â…“ innings. Brown is 18-7 with a 2.22 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP. She has 261 strikeouts and 74 walks in 163â…” innings.

The winner of Game 3 between Texas and Arizona State will join Tennessee, Arkansas, Alabama, UCLA and Nebraska at the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City. There are two other Game 3s today, including Texas Tech at Florida and Oklahoma hosting Mississippi State.
