The El Paso County coroner on Monday identified the man who died Saturday while hiking the Manitou Incline as 48-year-old Nickolay Jogolev, according to Gazette news partner KOAA.
Friends set up a GoFundMe to support Jogolev’s family.
Emergency personnel arrived around 9 a.m. Saturday for a call about a person experiencing breathing problems near step 900, El Paso County Search and Rescue spokesman Chris Valentine said. The Incline was closed for several hours during the incident.
The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office announced around noon Saturday that Jogolev had died.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the individual who passed away,” the Sheriff’s Office wrote in a social media post.
The last death on the Incline, a difficult hike of over 2,700 steps and 2,000 feet of elevation gain, was last spring, when Oregon resident John Tate, 63, died after a medical emergency.
