Robstown Memorial Day ruck march honors fallen service members

Veterans in Robstown honored fallen service members with a 10-mile Memorial Day ruck march remembering heroes lost in combat.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — South Texas veterans and community members spent Memorial Day honoring the sacrifices of fallen service members during a 10-mile ruck march through the streets of Robstown.

Among those participating was Marine Corps veteran Marcos Alvarado, who served more than 11 years in the military. Alvarado marched in memory of Marine Sergeant William Stacey, who was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2012 at just 23 years old.

Alvarado said the event gives veterans and the community a meaningful way to remember those who gave their lives in service to the country.

“For me, it was just a new way to celebrate and honor those that sacrificed their lives for us,” Alvarado said. “When I got out of the Marine Corps, I wanted to do something to give the community an opportunity to explain what today was.”

Also taking part in the march was VFW Senior Vice President Jason Flores, who walked in honor of two fallen soldiers; Army Specialist Rogelio Garza Jr., who was killed in Afghanistan in 2006, and Staff Sergeant Michael Ollis, who died in 2013.

The Memorial Day event served as both a tribute and a reminder of the sacrifices made by service members and their families. Participants carried weighted packs through Robstown as a symbol of the burdens carried by military personnel in service.

Organizers and veterans alike said the march is about ensuring the stories and sacrifices of fallen heroes are never forgotten.
