Republican voters across Tarrant County choose a few remaining party nominees in statewide and congressional runoff elections on Tuesday.
Five GOP primary races are in runoffs: U.S. senator, U.S. House District 30, Texas attorney general, Texas railroad commissioner, and Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, Place 3.
Election Day is May 26, and polls are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Registered voters may cast a ballot at any polling location in the county.
In primary elections, each party elects a slate of candidates to run against each other in the November midterms. Races that saw no candidate win more than 50% of votes March 3 got put back on the ballot for a runoff election between the top two vote-getters.
Texas does not require voters to register with a political party. However, voters can participate in only one party’s primary each election cycle, meaning those who cast a ballot in the March primaries must vote within the same party during the runoffs.

U.S. House District 30
Dallas-based lawyer Sholdon Daniels is facing Everett Jackson, a small-business owner and community organizer. The congressional district falls mostly in Dallas County but includes a small portion of Tarrant encompassing a sliver of Arlington and the southern half of Grand Prairie.
Nearly 40% of Tarrant voters supported Jackson in March, while about 20% chose Daniels out of four candidates.
The runoff winner will face Dallas pastor Frederick Haynes III, who won the Democratic primary in March.
Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, Place 3
Bexar County attorney Alison Fox is facing Thomas Smith, a lawyer in the Texas attorney general’s office, for the seat on Texas’ highest court for criminal cases, made up of nine judges.
Statewide, Fox secured 31.3% of votes, and Smith got 30.69%. In Tarrant County, 35.85% of voters supported Fox, compared to 27.57% who chose Smith.
The GOP nominee will face Okey Anyiam, who ran unopposed to secure the Democratic nomination.
Texas railroad commissioner
Bo French, former chairman of the Tarrant County GOP, is facing Jim Wright, a current member of the Texas Railroad Commission that oversees the state’s oil and gas industry. The commission’s three members are elected statewide for six-year terms, with one position on the ballot every two years.
In March, French and Wright each received about 32% of votes statewide in a five-way race. Among Tarrant voters, 41% supported French, and 40% chose Wright.
The winner will face Democratic nominee Jon Rosenthal, who ran unopposed in March.
Texas attorney general
Mayes Middleton, a state senator representing Galveston, and Chip Roy, a U.S. congressman representing Fredericksburg, are seeking the statewide seat.
In Tarrant, 46.43% of voters supported Middleton in March’s four-way race, while 30.47% voted for Roy. Statewide, Middleton got 39.13%, and Roy got 31.6%.
The Democratic primary for attorney general also went to a runoff, featuring Nathan Johnson and Joe Jaworski. The winners of both runoffs will face each other on the November ballot.
U.S. senator
Incumbent Sen. John Cornyn is facing Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton after the two beat six other candidates in March.
About 45% of Tarrant voters previously favored Cornyn, while 38% supported Paxton. Statewide, the candidates were neck-and-neck, with 42.01% of votes for Cornyn and 40.54% for Paxton.
The winner will face Democratic nominee James Talarico, a state representative from Round Rock.
