A large-scale distribution event was taking place in the yellow lot at NRG Stadium Saturday.

HOUSTON — As the government shutdown continues, the Houston Food Bank is helping families in need with large-scale food distribution events, including one Saturday morning at NRG Stadium’s yellow lot.

Thousands of people arrived to receive food, though organizers managed the flow in increments to keep lines moving efficiently.

Volunteers worked nonstop, loading trunks with boxes of fresh produce, bags of potatoes, gallons of milk, and proteins. The effort is a partnership between the Houston Texans and the Houston Food Bank, and more than 5,000 families had registered to receive assistance.

Ms. Felicia, a SNAP recipient who arrived early with her son and grandson.

“Even if you’re getting a small amount, a small amount can go a long way,” she told reporter Michelle Choi. “It can stretch, you know what I’m saying, and that’s a meal that you can make every day for you, your children, and you don’t have to go hungry.”

She also expressed gratitude for the volunteers and organizers, noting that the food will mean a great deal to her family.

The distribution continues until 1 p.m., and those who have not yet registered can still do so, though organizers caution that showing up without registration may result in losing your spot. In all, organizers expect to help around 5,000 families on Saturday.
