You may notice something different if you head out to the Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery after the sun goes down on Memorial Day.

That’s because the Texas Land Commissioner and the Veterans Land Board (VLB) are lighting up the headstones of service members killed or missing in action.

The grounds will remain open through the night on Memorial Day for anyone who wants to view the tribute.

Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham made the announcement last Friday, saying, “This tribute reflects the deep respect the Texas General Land Office (GLO) and the VLB hold for the courageous men and women who gave everything for our nation.”

Organizers say the display is meant to give the community a meaningful way to pause, reflect and remember the service members who gave their lives for the country.
