The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported in 2025 that 1 in 31 children were identified with autism spectrum disorder from a 2022 study of the Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network.

The network includes 16 sites across the United States and looks at the prevalence of autism among children between the ages of 4 and 8, according to the website.

In 2014, the CDC reported that 1 in 68 children had autism or autism spectrum disorder. A study from the Texas Center for Disability Studies at The University of Texas in Austin reported in 2025 that household language and health insurance may play a role in the diagnostic journey.

The report also stated that children in Spanish-only speaking households were evaluated and identified later than their peers in English and English/Spanish speaking households.

The CDC’s study also showed boys are three times more likely than girls to be identified as having autism spectrum disorder.

Autism is a term commonly used to describe challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication, according to the CDC.

The Mayo Clinic states treatment options could include behavior, communication, education and family therapies.
