AT&T’s planned billion-dollar-plus global headquarters has secured a key zoning approval.
The Plano City Council unanimously approved a request to rezone a tiny sliver that is part of the company’s planned 54-acre campus at 5400 Legacy Drive so the company could erect a “mini Reunion Tower” that could reach a height of 280 feet, topped with the company’s logo.
The 1.4-acre portion required rezoning because the proposed landmark tower will also function as a communication antenna. Initial reading to final passage took about 30 minutes Tuesday night with little debate from council members regarding the proposal.
“I’m very happy that AT&T is coming in there,” said council member Bob Kehr. “My first thought was, ‘Oh my gosh, we’re losing that iconic [Electronic Data Systems] building. What a shame.’ But immediately after, my thought is if there’s going to be a company to come in and do something different — who better than a 150-year-old company that is bringing its headquarters here.”
