Gigafactory Texas, which produces Tesla’s Cybertruck, best-selling Model Y and the new Cybercab, is adding a sportier vehicle to its lineup.
Tesla Inc. executives confirmed this week that the Roadster, which Tesla calls an all-electric supercar, will be built in Texas.
Chief Designer Franz von Holzhausen and engineering Vice President Lars Moravy said on the Ride the Lightning podcast that Tesla fans should expect to “see a lot of things start to unfold in the next months.”
The disclosure signals the possibility of further investment in the sprawling factory east of Austin. Already, the company has said it plans to produce its Optimus robots there and is currently scaling up production of Cybercab, its purpose-built robotaxi. The two-seater was the newest addition since Cybertruck, which rolled out in late 2023.
First introduced as a prototype in 2006, the original Roadster ended production about six years later when its contract with Lotus Cars, which supplied the Roadster’s chassis, expired.
Since then, CEO Elon Musk has publicly pondered when the second generation of the Roadster would arrive. Originally, it was expected to make its debut in 2020, then 2023. And, earlier this spring, Musk said the next generation would be unveiled in late April.
In its first quarter update for investors, Tesla said the sporty EV was in design development.
Despite the additions of Cybercab and Optimus, Gigafactory Texas ended 2025 with a smaller headcount than it had the previous year, with the company saying it had 16,506 employees in the Austin area. Though hundreds of job openings are listed at the plant for roles in vehicle software, manufacturing, energy, design and others, none appear to be directly tied to the Roadster.
In California, though, Tesla has a job posting for a manufacturing engineer who could assist with concept development and launch of battery manufacturing equipment for the sports car.
When the vehicle arrives, it’s expected to have the ability to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 1.9 seconds, a top speed of 250 mph and range of 620 miles. Tesla has also filed trademark applications with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for a wordmark and a design meant to signal “speed, propulsion, heat, or wind,” according to the filing.
